German developer Daedalic Entertainment has reportedly finished developing in-house games. In a translated article from Wirtschaft Games, the studio says it will focus its activities on game publishing, sales and marketing. In a statement provided to the outlet, the studio acknowledged that it faced a “difficult turning point” following its latest game, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The adventure game was released last May and was widely criticized by players and the public. The game’s negative reception was so significant that a day following its release, the development team apologized for the status of its release. “We realize and regret that the game did not live up to the expectations we set ourselves,” he wrote in Labyrinth at the end of May. “Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused.” What’s next for Dadeleek and the Lord of the Rings? Game Wirtschaft also alleged that 25 Daedalic employees (out of a workforce believed to number over 90) had recently been laid off as a result of this restructuring. Another Lord of the Rings game that’s been in development since mid-2022 has been completely cancelled. The unannounced project was reportedly planned as a follow-up to Gollum. At the time of writing this article, Daedalic has always been committed to improving Gollum through patches and updates.
