Nintendo’s newest party hit is called Everybody 1-2-Switch and the game is officially out today for Nintendo Switch. Only until shortly before the release was a secret kept with the included mini-games, which made us a bit reluctant at first. Yesterday, however, there was a Nintendo party in Berlin, to which a number of media representatives were invited and where we were able to get an impression of whether there really was a party atmosphere.
Yes, there can be a mood, but with a few limitations: You need a lot of space and a lot of friends or teammates. In smartphone mode, up to 100 people can take part in a game using nothing more than their smartphone – comparable to the Jackbox games. In the largest round we felt like 40 players, but an exact count was difficult with the crowd.
We were randomly divided into two teams, left and right. A “little party” was played, which lasted regarding 20 minutes. But there were also 40 and 60 minutes to choose from. The mini-games were also chosen randomly. There are mini-games that are played alternately, but most of them are played simultaneously. Games like Bingo or Ochs am Berg (Squid Game fans know it as “Red Light, Green Light”) are played very intuitively and leave little room for ambiguity. With ninjas, on the other hand, there were problems with understanding, which arose due to the large group and the resulting volume. But once you’ve played that a few times, the rules are clear, so everyone should get their money’s worth. And there is also a practice round – so no one can excuse themselves for not having understood anything!
On site, we only took part in rounds in smartphone mode and only watched other people in smaller Joy-Con rounds. Up to eight people can participate when playing with just the Joy-Con. The players we watched were clearly having fun, but we always had the feeling that the most fun comes from bringing as many people together as possible. With smaller groups, it seems to depend heavily on the participants. It is estimated that you should get 6 to 8 people together in the smartphone games so that a certain dynamic is created in the group, with the Joy-Con even 2 players are enough to have a great time. Maybe consider that Everybody 1-2-Switch doesn’t have to be the only title for a successful “fun and games party followingnoon/evening”, but it can be a good addition. In addition, only one person needs the game, while everyone else can join with their smartphone, which worked really quickly and easily for us. You scan a QR code, snap a funny selfie, type in a name and you’re good to go!
It is possible to skip individual rounds, but the fun is in participating. In addition, you can also type texts between the individual rounds, or select reactions, which are then displayed on the screen. But that’s more of a nice gimmick. Even unequal teams are no problem: In one game round, we accidentally started a 6 vs. 2 game in which the team of two received a point boost at the end of each game evaluation, which might have a strong influence on the final score.
At the Nintendo party, we had more fun with Everybody 1-2-Switchthan we initially thought, which has also been confirmed by others. However, we can’t yet imagine that the game is as much fun in your own living room as it is in a larger location. With a total of 17 games, you might run out of breath a bit quickly as you quickly replay many games. Additional games via DLC or community creations as in Super Mario Maker or the Joy-Con Garage from Nintendo Labo would be an interesting approach to keep the title interesting in the long term. After all, you can also individualize the questions in the quiz. You don’t need paper and pencil at the bingo party, your smartphone is your bingo card. Now it’s up to both Nintendo and the players whether the 1-2 Switch series still has a chance in the future.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for the successful party last night. Great location, really delicious food and many incredibly nice encounters that make us remember it for a long time. The pictures of the evening are still being sorted and viewed. If something useful comes up, it will certainly end up on Instagram soon – take a look!
