Urgent Appeal to Walloon Authorities: Avoiding Car Scrappage Disaster and Air Pollution Fight

2023-06-30 06:29:33

Without political measures, 24% of the Walloon car fleet (439,752 cars) might be scrapped within 2.5 years as part of the fight once morest air pollution, Traxio warned on Friday. The Belgian federation of the mobility sector therefore calls for a jump from the Walloon authorities to avoid a disaster both “at the financial and mobility level” for the owners of the cars concerned.

From January 1, 2025, Wallonia is supposed to become a low-emissions zone, without bearing this official title. It is indeed provided in the decree of January 17, 2019 relating to the fight once morest atmospheric pollution linked to the circulation of vehicles that Euro0, Euro1, Euro2 and Euro3 cars will no longer have access to Walloon territory beyond a distance of 3,000 km covered. No exception is made for ancestors.

A year later, from January 1, 2026, Euro4 cars will no longer be able to access it either, unless they were acquired before 2019.

Urgent appeal to politics

Only, 4 years later, it seems that the project has been put on hold. “There is still no execution decree”, notes Traxio. “The question that therefore arises is whether thousands of cars will be banned from driving in Wallonia from January 1, 2025. Nor is there any more talk of the derogation provided for in the decree which would give cars, equipped with a certificate aimed at encouraging environmental performance, temporary one-year access to Wallonia”, continues the federation.

The latter therefore launches an urgent appeal to the Walloon political world to clarify the decree of January 17, 2019.

“Clean the heat engines”

In the meantime, the garage sector has already invested in a framework/label (Eco-Expert) via training and equipment for measuring exhaust gases. “It will therefore be able to help measure exhaust gases and ‘clean’ thermal engines so that they meet future standards that the authorities will still have to set”, punctuates Traxio.
