As a result of several fatal accidents, stricter rules for e-scooters are now to be introduced in Italy. The Council of Ministers in Rome passed some changes to the road traffic regulations on Tuesday evening.
According to the new regulations passed by the cabinet, drivers of e-scooters must wear a helmet and take out insurance, and a number plate is required for e-scooters. The measures still have to be approved by Parliament.
What new rules will apply to e-scooters in Italy
It will be forbidden to park e-scooters on sidewalks in the future. “We have to create some order. The unregulated parking of e-scooters on sidewalks in big cities like Milan and Rome has become a real problem,” said Transport Minister Matteo Salvini following the new laws were presented.

As in many other European countries, the use of e-scooters in Italy has experienced a real boom in recent years. Rental companies are flooding major cities with e-scooters, popular with locals and tourists alike.
However, the police report countless accidents, with six people killed while riding scooters in Rome alone in the last two years. The e-scooters are also a problem for pedestrians, as there are no regulations as to where they should be parked.
Italy is taking stricter action once morest drink and drug driving
The Italian government is also stepping up the fight once morest drink and drug driving. No tolerance for drugged or drunk drivers, with a particular focus on repeat offenders, is the Meloni government’s mantra. Anyone who has already been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol will then be subject to the 0.0 per thousand rule.
To do this, the vehicle must be equipped with a so-called “Alcolock” system, which prevents driving if the alcohol test shows more than zero. If someone is stopped once more while driving under the influence of alcohol, their driver’s license will be revoked for up to 30 years.
What are the penalties in Italy?
The same applies to drug traffickers. If the first quick test is positive, the driver’s license is gone for 20 days, the second time the driving ban is at least three years. A minor who drives without a license and is drunk or under the influence of drugs cannot obtain a driver’s license until he is 24 years old.
