Well, it happened once more. Last month, we announced a peculiar happening at brick-and-mortar stores in the Akihabara district of Japan. This region is known as a popular hub for sales, especially for electronics. Previously, it had been the scene of large queues during the launches of the popular RTX 3060 and 3060 TI. However, the situation seems to have changed:
As it turned out, only one person showed up to buy the RTX 4060 Ti in person – no queuing, waiting or scalping. The store was open, with people buying everything but the newly released sign.
Due to the fact that the sales embargo is lifted late in Japan, around 10 pm, waiting in line at a physical store was a guarantee of getting the card on launch day, but it seems that this is no longer necessary. Yesterday, a month later, history repeated itself with the launch of the non-Ti RTX 4060.

It sounds like a joke, but it’s not: The staff of @hermita_akiba were there once more, covering the launch of the plaque at brick-and-mortar stores across the district. Of all the customers, only one showed up to buy the RTX 4060 on launch day. The person in question was upgrading his GTX 1060 (a card that until recently was the most used on Steam).

Looking at another photo posted by the group of journalists, apparently one of the most popular stores didn’t even stay open late to cover the launch – predicting a lack of sales.

Why didn’t anyone show up?
This is the result of a number of factors, the main one being the end of cryptocurrency mining. Without miners buying crazy slabs, we don’t have that huge demand of previous years.

Another factor is the disappointing performance that the RTX 4060 it presents. In tests carried out by GamerNexus, the RTX 4060 does not show a huge leap in performance when compared to last generation cards.
According to Steam Hardware Data, the most popular boards are still older models such as the GTX 1650, GTX 1060RTX 3060 e RTX 2060. They are all in the same class as the RTX 4060 – intermediate entry cards, aimed at playing at 1080p with everything on High and 60 frames. The problem is that the RTX 4060 doesn’t offer any significant performance gains when compared to these cards – at least it doesn’t justify the upgrade for the average user. Even more so when we’re talking regarding FULL HD resolution at 60 frames.
