The German Volkswagen Group intends to make it possible to use the electric car charging network of rival Tesla for its customers in North America.
Thus, Volkswagen follows the example of the two giants of the American auto industry, General Motors and Ford, which decided to use this network for their customers.
“We welcome access to additional charging infrastructure for our customers in North America,” Volkswagen development director Michael Steiner said in a statement, adding that the group is constantly improving charging through open standards and seamless compliance.
According to the statement, Volkswagen is in talks with Tesla regarding ways to improve the efficiency and use of the North American Tesla Charging Standard (NACS) for customers of the largest European automaker.
For its part, the American charging network owned by Volkswagen, “Electrify America”, announced its intention to make the Tesla charging network available for use by the German group’s customers in North America, starting in 2025.
It is noteworthy that the “Electrify America” was born as part of the fines incurred by Volkswagen in the wake of the diesel scandal, as the German group was forced at the time to pledge large investments to establish its own charging network.
According to Electrify America data, it provides regarding 4,000 sockets at more than 850 charging stations.
According to “Bloomberg NEF” market research, the number of sockets that Tesla provided to its customers in the past year was significantly higher than the number of Volkswagen sockets, as it reached nearly 14,000 sockets in the United States.
