The next gold for Jacqueline Seifriedsberger

The ski jumping competitions at the European Games in Poland are dominated by Austria. Daniel Tschofenig initially led an Austrian double success ahead of Jan Hörl in the men’s normal hill competition in Zakopane today. After that, the duo, together with Sara Marita Kramer and Jacqueline Seifriedsberger, won gold in the mixed event on the normal hill. On Tuesday, Seifriedsberger also won the title in singles. “It’s going really well here, I feel good and I’m extremely happy. It’s great that we did it together,” said the 32-year-old from Schildorner, who and her colleagues surpassed the second-placed Norwegians by no less than 62.6 points had.

Tschofenig laid the foundation for his sovereign individual victory in the first round. After a jump of 104 meters, the 21-year-old from Carinthia was 5.4 points ahead of Gregor Deschwanden (Sui). In the decision, he went a little further with 104.5 m and extended his lead with 270.3 points to 7.6 points. In the second round, Hörl (262.7) jumped three meters further with 104.5 than the Swiss (258.0) and thus overtook him. The competition was canceled on Wednesday following 41 of 54 jumpers due to strong winds and was restarted a day later in better conditions.

For Tschofenig it was the first major individual success in his adult career. Zakopane remains extremely fertile ground for him. At the Junior World Championships in 2022, he won three gold medals on the small hill with individual, team and mixed titles. At the beginning of this year he also won the qualification in the World Cup on the large hill and a day later also the team competition with his colleagues.

“They were two very cool jumps. The form curve is always pointing upwards, the hill suits me. I like to come here more often,” said Tschofenig. “The fact that Jan finished second and that things have already gone so well with the girls makes it even nicer, of course.” “Tschofe” had not counted on the triumph. “Last week I was still a bit desperate in training. I was almost worried that it might get embarrassing. But here it worked out well from the first jump,” said the winner.

Beijing team Olympic champion Hörl was also happy. “It’s not easy on the small hill, but I summed it up well in the competition. Silver at the European Games sounds great,” said the 24-year-old.

Austria currently holds seven gold, four silver and six bronze medals at the European Games.
