Although Adrian Newey has recently extended the adventure with Red Bull, the famous engineer knows that the hour of retirement will ring soon.
Motorsport.com revealed in May that Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer of Red Bullwas going to extend his contract with the Austrian team, although its duration is unknown. And from the height of his 64 years, one can wonder if Newey has not entered the final stretch of his F1 career, which started in the late 1980s.
A major contributor to Red Bull’s 100 wins and eleven world titles, Newey said that while he didn’t feel the need to quit yet, he was aware that his retirement was approaching.
“I have the chance to do what I always wanted to do and to love this job. I loved it”he confided to the microphone of Sky Sports during the Canadian GP. “Of course, my career can’t last forever so I think as long as the team wants me and I keep having fun, I will carry on. To be realistic, it’s a countdown. I don’t know not exactly when that day [la retraite] to arrive at.”
The Montreal event marked not only Red Bull’s 100th victory in F1 but also the 200th success for a car designed by Newey, who logically joined Max Verstappen on the podium to collect the manufacturer’s trophy.
And despite a career rich in success, the Briton puts all his titles and victories in the background! “It was an extraordinary adventure”he added. “Since I was little, I dreamed of doing engineering and racing, so when I got my first racing job and got my first paycheck, it was a really big moment. the rest was just bonus.”
Asked regarding the milestone successes of his career, Newey replied: “They are obviously all special. The most significant are of course the first, in Mexico, then those where the championship was decided on the wire, […] Abu Dhabi with Sebastian [Vettel] once morest Fernando [Alonso, en 2010] and then Max once morest Lewis [Hamilton, en 2021].”
