If night work concerns millions of people, this shifted lifestyle would have negative effects on men’s health.

Although the majority of jobs have daytime hours, night work remains essential in certain sectors. From materials handling to hospitals and fire stations, many people work between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. These specific hours force the body to live out of step and sleep during the day.

However, the ability of the body to support these night work schedules changes according to our sex. And in this area, men would have the most difficulty living it. However, that would have consequences for their health. This is revealed by a study published in May 2023 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

A biological clock more disturbed in men than in women

To understand the impact of working hours and, by extension, night work on the body, the researchers conducted two experiments. At first, they have observed the behavior of the biological clock of male and female mice facing a shifted sleep cycle. Then they studied a group of human volunteers under similar conditions.

In presenting the results, the researchers found that living at night had a more severe impact on the health of mice but also of human males. But the most surprising thing is that the whole body suffers from this nocturnal lifestyle. In a statement, the researchers said that “Everything from their genetic activity to their gut bacteria to their blood pressure went haywire.”

Finally, these data were compared with another study conducted on a panel of 90,000 night workers. It appears that the results are confirmed. Moreover, disease risks are increased among male workers.

What are the health risks of night work?

It is important to take into account that the diseases developed may vary depending on the nature of the work carried out. However, the risks are well presented and impact both the heart and the lungs. So, increased risks of diabetes, heart disease and cholesterol were observed in the panel.

If women are less sensitive to this rhythm of life, they are no less immune. Indeed, the researchers compared their health to that of women working during the day. It appears that night workers are more at risk of suffering from metabolic syndrome.

Currently, these points are not taken into account in the arduousness and risks of work. However, the study shows that night work, even if it is necessary, has a real impact on health.
