2022 Bank Account Growth: A Record Increase of 11.5% with 645,412 New Accounts Opened

In 2022, individuals who opened an account for the first time in 2022 reached 645,412, an increase of 11.5% compared to 2021.

Among these first-time bankers, 43% are women, 30% are between 20 and 25 years old and 14% between 18 and under 20 years old. In addition, 91% of them are Moroccans residing in Morocco and 5% are Moroccans residing abroad (MRE).

At the end of December 2022, the Central Banking Accounts Center recorded approximately 34 million open accounts, up 8.4% compared to 2021 with 63% checking accounts (21.3 million) and 31% passbook accounts ( 10.4 million). Accounts denominated in foreign currencies represent 0.3% (112,684), of which 80% in euros.

The number of people holding at least one open bank account stands at 17.3 million people, 4% of whom are legal entities.

In addition, the age group of people whose age is greater than or equal to 60 comes first with 3.7 million people having an account, followed by the group between 35 and 40 years old and that between 40 and 45 with 1.8 million each. Individuals with only one open account represent 49% once morest 28% for those with two accounts and 12% for three accounts.

The ownership rate, defined as the number of residents with at least one active bank account in relation to the resident adult population, stood at 53% at the end of 2022, i.e. almost the same rate as in 2021.

Individuals with at least one active bank account increased by 2% to 14.5 million people following 14.2 million recorded at the end of December 2021. The adult population, meanwhile, increased by 1.4% to 27, 4 million individuals in 2022.

The rate of ownership of bank accounts by gender fell from 66% to 65% for men and rose from 40% to 41% for women. The age group which records the highest rate of bank account holding is that of 60 years and over with 81.2% for men and 52.9% for women.
