Netflix silently kills its Basic plan in Canada

After causing an uproar by moving to limit password sharing to its subscribers, Netflix seems ready to embark on yet another controversy. According to information from the blogTOthe streaming service seems to be planning to extinguish its plan Basican intermediate option between the plan Basic with Adsreleased last year, and the plan Standard.

As noted by the vehicle, this change has already happened in Canada, which now only has the cheapest plan (US$6/month) — which was renamed to “Standard with Ads” — and the Standard plan ($16.50/month). In other words, anyone who wants to watch their movies and series without any interruption will now have to pay more than double what they used to.

No Brazil, the Standard plan with ads costs R$18.90 per month, while the Basic plan costs R$25.90 per month. Although the second one is still available here, it has been hidden for some time on the Netflix plan selection screen, which can be interpreted as an indication that this change will not be exclusive to Canada.

To check it out, click on the “See all plans” button, as shown in the GIF below:

Despite the presence of ads, the cheapest plan has certain advantages over the Basic plan. In addition to the reduced price, it also features streaming in Full HD (1080p), while the Basic plan is still limited to HD (720p) — yes, in full 2023. Subscribers to the Standard plan with ads, however, cannot download their movies and series to watch offline.

The ad-free Standard plan is available in Brazil for R$39.90 per month and, like its ad-supported version, allows you to watch on up to two devices simultaneously, once morest just one in the Basic plan. The Premium plan, which features streaming in 4K HDR and four simultaneous screens, costs R$55.90 per month.

Asked by blogTO, Netflix has not commented on the change. It is not yet known when and if the Basic plan will in fact be phased out in other countries.
