In the future, all healthcare professionals will have to use the electronic patient file, both in hospitals and in doctors’ surgeries or pharmacies. The Federal Council opened the consultation on the ad hoc law on Wednesday until October 19.
Introduced since 2021, the electronic patient file (EPD) is struggling to take off. Yet it is an important instrument of health care. All relevant information can be posted there and consulted at any time. This increases the quality and safety of medical treatment.
Hospitals, birthing centers and nursing homes are already required to use DEP. In the future, the DEP must be imposed throughout the chain of care for all health professionals, particularly in the field of ambulatory care.
A DEP will be opened automatically and free of charge for anyone domiciled in Switzerland. Each individual will decide which healthcare professionals will have access to their record. It will be possible to oppose the opening of his DEP.
