A Meta announced today a variety of parental control features for three of its main platforms: the Messengero Instagram and the Facebook.
First up is Messenger’s parental supervision tools, which are available in the UK and Canada, and will expand to more countries over the coming months. With them, the parents or guardians of a teenager will be able to see exactly how he/she uses the messenger, although it does not give access to the messages.
With these tools, it is possible to see exactly how much time a teenager spends on Messenger, receive notifications regarding changes in your contact list and in the messenger settings, and check who can see the Stories published by them and/or send them messages . In addition, it is also possible to receive alerts if the teen decides to block someone — that is, if the teen agrees to share this information.
Instagram DMs, of course, weren’t left out. From now on, whenever a teenager decides to block someone, the social network will encourage them to add their parents to the platform’s parental supervision feature. Furthermore, in addition to seeing exactly which people follow and are followed by their child, parents will also have the option to see what mutual friends an account they have recently followed has.
Also, from now on, to be able to send a message to someone who doesn’t follow you yet, you’ll first need to send an invitation, and Instagram will only allow you to send one invitation at a time. According to Meta, it will only be possible to send text messages in these invitations and the user is prevented from sending new messages until the other person accepts the request.
Another novelty is a notification on Facebook that will remind young people to take a break from the social network whenever they spend more than 20 minutes browsing the feed. A version of this reminder that will appear at night is also being tested for Instagram, according to Meta.
Finally, the company commanded by Mark Zuckerberg also announced that it will expand, starting today, the Silent mode (Quiet Mode) of Instagram globally. Until then, the feature was exclusive to the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
