Canada’s Gold Cup Opener: A Dramatic Draw Against Guadeloupe

Canada began its Gold Cup run with a 2-2 draw Tuesday night once morest Guadeloupe. After a slow start, Canada found their rhythm in the second half to take control of the game, but ultimately stumbled in stoppage time.

Against Guadeloupe, the representatives of the Maple Leaf have framed only five of their 17 shots. Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan stopped three of Guadeloupe’s four shots on target.

Deprived of its best elements for the tournament, Canada certainly did not start its match as it would have liked. In the 23rd minute of play, Thierry Ambrose managed to sneak through the Canadian defense in the box and he pushed the ball into the back of the net, sliding on the ground, to give Guadeloupe the lead.

The Canadians finally gave a sign of life back for the second half. In the 49th minute, Junior Hoilett crossed the ball through Lucas Cavallini, who hit the target to bring both teams back to square one.

Canada came back to the charge in the 70th minute of play, through Richie Laryea. The midfielder played luck when the ball first ricocheted off Guadeloupe defender Meddy Lina. The ball then hit Laryea’s foot, before ending its way into the back of the net. The Canadians took the lead in the game for the first time.

However, things got complicated for the Canadians in stoppage time. On a free kick, Ambrose recovered the ball to the left of Borjan and tried to cross the ball for Cédric Avinel. However, it was Canadian player Jacen Russell-Rowe who redirected the ball into his own net.

This own goal from Russell-Rowe allowed Guadeloupe to snatch a draw in Canada.

Canada will be back in action on Saturday to face Guatemala. John Herdman’s men will then complete the group stage with a duel once morest Cuba next Tuesday.
