ROME, June 27 (Archyde.com) – The Italian government has nominated Fabio Panetta, a member of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) executive board, as the next governor of the Bank of Italy, we learned on Tuesday. from two government sources.

The current governor, Ignazio Visco, is due to retire in November.

The government plays a key role in the appointment of the governor of the central bank, under a complex procedure which also requires consultation with the Superior Council of the Bank of Italy and the approval of the head of state.

According to a third source familiar with the matter, the Board of Governors last week approved the appointment of Fabio Panetta, who will leave a vacant seat on the ECB’s executive board.

Aged 63, Fabio Panetta has had a long career of more than 30 years at the Bank of Italy and has been a member of the ECB’s executive board since the beginning of 2020.

He is ranked in the camp of “doves”, just like Ignazio Visco, governor of the Bank of Italy since 2011.

The Executive Board of the ECB, numbering six members including President Christine Lagarde, has always included representatives of the three largest economies in the euro zone – Germany, France, Italy – under an unspoken rule.

The ECB declined to comment. (Report Giuseppe Fonte, Angelo Amante, with Balazs Koranyi, French version Jean-Stéphane Brosse)
