A fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. on Friday June 23 in the Turkish province of Mugla, in a forest near the Mediterranean seaside resort of Marmaris. Firefighters, who arrived on the scene with helicopters and planes to put out the blaze, discovered a charred body between the flames in a 5-hectare destroyed forest area.

After an autopsy of his body and an examination of his belongings, Turkish police identified him as a 32-year-old Belgian of Moroccan origin. According to the police, he was strangled with the strap of a backpack or a sports bag. The perpetrator or perpetrators left his lifeless body in the forest and then set it on fire, starting the forest fire.

The 32-year-old Belgian was on vacation in Marmaris, Turkish media reported. He would have stayed in a hotel and would have gone to the hospital the day before his death. Footage of the man an hour before the wildfire also surfaced in the same media on Monday. In these images, he can be seen crossing a parking lot in the village. The sequence of events and the reasons for the assassination remain unclear.

An investigation has been opened and a person has already been arrested on suspicion of intentional homicide and intentional lighting of a forest fire. It would be a man convicted several times for, among other things, theft, threats and sexual abuse. He has since been released for lack of evidence. The camera footage is now being analyzed in hopes of linking him or someone else to the facts.
