The origin of the Big Mac
In the 1940s, the McDonald brothers popularized the sale of take-out burgers. But the legendary Big Mac is not a sibling creation. In August 1967, Jim Delligatti, a chain franchisee, invented the Big Mac. Inside his restaurant in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, he decides to pile two steaks between three slices of bread with strips of pickles and salad. The burger is initially sold for 45 cents in his restaurant. It was so successful that the chain decided to include it on the menu of all its restaurants a year later.
Originally, the firm hesitated between two names. The Aristocrat and the Blue Ribbon Burger. The idea for the Big Mac was given by publicity secretary Esther Glickstein Rose in 1967. The 21-year-old had to wait until 1985 to be credited with her invention.
It was intended, when it was created, to compete with the Big Boy, a similar double-decker sandwich available since 1936.
Since its creation, the recipe has remained unchanged and the ingredients are the same all over the world: three slices of bread, two hamburgers, melted cheddar, onion, pickle, salad and the famous Big Mac sauce.
The most popular sandwich
In 2022, the brand sold more than 900 million Big Macs every day worldwide. Very popular among Americans, but also among the Japanese, it carries with it the bad reputation of icon of junk food. The enthusiasm around this burger gave the idea to the English magazine The Economist to create the Big Mac index. An economic reference which makes it possible to determine the cost of living from one country to another. Depending on the country, the price varies enormously. In the United States, the average is more around 4.23 euros, 4.50 euros in France or 2.77 euros in Japan. Making the sandwich costs the restaurant only 66 cents!
The Big Mac has a museum restaurant in North Huntingdon, near Pittsburgh. Inside, there is the largest Big Mac statue in the world: 4 meters high and 3.50 meters wide.
