“The billion dollars… give me back everything they took from me, and the damage to my reputation,” Ghosn told CNN anchor Becky Anderson, in an interview on Tuesday.

“If I were filing the complaint in the US, which I can’t do because I’m not a US citizen, the amount would be much higher,” Ghosn said.

The 69-year-old Lebanese-Brazilian-French businessman was one of the most prominent executives in the auto industry before he was arrested in Japan following an internal investigation revealed “significant acts of misconduct” over many years committed by him and a CEO. another big.

Ghosn was charged with failure to report profits, breach of trust and embezzlement of company funds. Ghosn denies the allegations.

The 40-year veteran of the auto industry said the lawsuit filed in Lebanon is for “crimes … committed prior to and at the moment” of his arrest.

While under house arrest in 2019, Ghosn fled Japan on a private jet while hiding inside a box normally used for audio equipment, he confirmed to the BBC in 2021.

“Honestly,” he said as he ran away, “if this doesn’t work, I’ll be back in a slightly worse situation than I was before, but if this works, a completely different life will open up for me.”

He cited a report by human rights experts working with the United Nations saying his detention was “arbitrary” and that he should be compensated.

“Even if it is misconduct, let’s say there is misconduct, you are not harming your company or your brand by arresting the CEO,” Ghosn said.

CNN has reached out to Nissan for comment.

Ghosn said he has no political ambition in Lebanon but is willing to help with “experience and knowledge” that would help the country, which is now facing an economic and political crisis.

“Lebanon is a failed state, not a failed country,” Ghosn added, noting that the country is rich and has many assets.
