Lebanon mourned the comedian Abdullah Homsi, who died today, Tuesday, at the age of 86, following he presented more than 1,700 hours of television, the most prominent of which was with the Abu Salim al-Tabla band, where he presented the character of Asaad (the sleepy).

He also presented many plays, especially for children, in addition to radio episodes.

Homsi was born in Tripoli in northern Lebanon in 1937, and he became a professional art through Channel 7 on the official Lebanon TV, and he appeared to the viewers with the personality of the villager who arrived in the city ignorant of its modern technologies and development, and he used to repeat in each episode the phrase (Sobhak Bonjour, we will be in Beirut), which became a phrase popular for decades.

The TV series (Dweik ya Dweik) was a gateway to fame for the actor Abdullah Homsi, as he discussed the contradiction between the customs of the countryside and the city, and criticized lying, hypocrisy, theft and deceit in the city, while rural life enjoyed some credibility.

More than forty years following the series “Dweik Ya Dweik”, Homsi appeared in a documentary film by George Salibi in 2016, where he participated in three scenes from the movie (Bonjour Beirut).

Salibi told Archyde.com, “I asked him to participate in the character of Dweik, who he played in a TV series in the early seventies, and she was expressing the good man of the village who was surprised by Beirut and its people and life in it, and decided to leave it and return to the village.”

Salibi added: “I recalled that character with its symbolism following more than forty years, to indicate the surprise he felt when he saw Beirut having lost its homes and its ancient urban character.. At that time he spent a whole day photographing the scenes and we moved between three neighborhoods in Beirut and under the sun’s rays while he was in his traditional clothes and a shawl.” And the felt on his head, and we re-filmed the footage more than once, so he did not object, did not complain, did not feel tired or bored, and was an example of the committed and ancient artist in his profession and commitment … He remains a title of the beautiful time in the world of acting and the small screen.

Homsi played prominent roles in more than 15 films, including the films of the Rahbani Brothers and the artist Fayrouz (Safar Berlak) and (Bint Al-Haris).

Before acting, Homsi was a bodybuilding champion and won the North Championship in 1955. In 1960, he founded the “Popular Arts Band”, which presented an elite group of young talents.

The body of the late artist will be held in his hometown of Tripoli, in northern Lebanon, tomorrow, Wednesday.
