With the summer holidays just around the corner, the company reports that many shops at Schiphol no longer sell disposable water bottles. As a result, 750,000 fewer plastic bottles would be thrown away. But how do you get water when you fly?

Schiphol is an exception for what you can take on board the aircraft in your hand luggage. This is because there are different scanning equipment at the security check than at other airports.

“We have modern CT scanners at the airport. They have the advantage that you can leave liquids and electronics in your bag or briefcase,” says an airport spokesperson. The scanners are located at the security checkpoint, which everyone has to pass, regardless of where you’re flying to.

There you have to stand in a large X-ray machine for a check. And your hand luggage goes through a scanner. For safety reasons, for a long time, you were allowed to take a maximum of 1 liter of liquid on board and that the liquid also had to be divided into a maximum of ten packages of a maximum of 100 milliliters each.

“You are allowed more at Schiphol liquid take it on board,” says the spokesman for the airport. “It is important that you drink enough on the plane. Most drinking bottles can therefore be taken on board with the contents included.” This does not apply to metal bottles. You have to drink them empty first, but you can refill them following the inspection.

“It may be that a security employee also decides differently with other bottles. He has the last word in this.” This may also be because the scanning device indicates that your bottle is not okay.

Bringing a refillable bottle pays off

Precisely because Schiphol is at the forefront of the world of airports with its CT scanners, the spokesperson advises not to assume that you can take your water on board anywhere. “If you have to transfer during your journey or for your return journey, we recommend that you adhere to the rules of a maximum of ten times 100 millimeters to avoid disappointment.”

You also avoid congestion at the checks and annoying situations at the security check. After that you can always buy or fill water to take on board. Because the bottles of water at the airport are even more expensive than in the store and cause more waste, it always pays to take a refillable bottle with you.
