Image generator update: Midjourney 5.2 enlarges the canvas
With generative AI, even small steps have a big impact. The 5.2 update for the Midjourney AI image generator brings a new tool for zooming out of images. Also, the default image aesthetic will change.

Midjourney 5.2 does not introduce a new command. At the beginning there is still the prompt for the /imagine command. Midjourney then presents four variants, including a set of commands: U1 to U4 each provide a variant with a higher resolution (“upscaling”). V1 to V4 generate further variants.
After upscaling, new menu items appear below the image. On the one hand, you can vary the image. The canvas can also be enlarged using the “Zoom out” command. Two buttons with the values 1.5 and 2 are available for this. The –zoom parameter accepts values between 1 and 2 from the command line.
Below generated images, Midjourney 5.2 shows a button for the “zoom out” parameter.
As a result, Midjourney presents four new variants from a greater viewing distance, so to speak: the previous motif appears smaller in the center of the image, while the AI creates more details at the edges. You can repeat the process as many times as you like.

The image on the left was generated by Midjourney from a prompt. The variant on the right was created with a zoom-out factor of 2.0.
Adobe’s current beta version of Photoshop includes a similar tool. With “generative filling” the image processing can use the AI image generator Adobe Firefly to also enlarge the canvas of a loaded image. In contrast to Photoshop, Midjourney only processes self-generated AI images.
You can continue the game to infinity. In the third zoom-out step, a new tab appeared on the screen.
Midjourney’s new style
Apart from that, Midjourney also changes style with version 5.2. According to the manufacturer, the current model promises sharper, more detailed images with better colors and contrasts.
In addition, the image generator should react more sensitively to the –style and –stylize parameters. With “–style raw”, Midjourney creates images that look like photographs. Other variants are “–style cute”, “–style scenic”, “–style original” and “–style expressive”.
The –stylize or –s parameter affects how artistically Midjourney styles colors, shapes, and composition. The default value is 100. A value of zero keeps Midjourney dry and humorless at the prompt. At the maximum value of 1000, the bot detaches itself from the prompt and produces artistic results.
The Stylize parameter controls how closely Midjourney follows the template: on the left two ducks playing poker to the letter with “–stylize 0”, on the right looser with “–stylize 1000”.
Midjourney version 5.2 is now preset for the AI image generator. However, older versions can still be used via the –version or –v parameter. The parameter currently accepts the values 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5.1 and 5.2 (for all midjourney commands and other prompt tips, see practical article in c’t 17/2023).
Prices and Availability
Midjourney 5.2 is available now. A subscription costs $11.90 per month and entitles you to 3.3 hours of faster GPU computation. For $35.70 you get 15 hours per month. If they are used up, you can buy more for 4 US dollars per hour or you have to be patient. (akr)
