It is not the Seine which flows in Paris but the Yonne. This is what the Burgundy department proclaims, which suddenly welcomes the fact that the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games will take place on the banks on July 26th. At the same time, Yonne wishes to affirm its desire to be one of the main players in French sport.

The department of Yonne is not afraid of anything. It evokes “a fine illusion” regarding the name of the famous river navigating along the most beautiful monuments in the world. “It’s not the Seine that flows in Paris but the Yonne” claims the fourth department, number 89, of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.
“It is the Seine that flows into the Yonne and not the other way around”
Back to the school benches to better understand. Geography lessons are far away and yet, we learned there that loWhen two rivers meet, it is obviously the one with the highest flow that wins and in this specific case, the Seine totals a flow of 80 m3 per second once morest 93 m3 for the Yonne at the meeting point of Montereau-Fault-Yonne (Seine-et-Marne). “It is therefore the Seine which flows into the Yonne and not the reverse” justifies the department in a press release. ” A defeat for the Seine which is in reality only a simple tributary of the Yonne« .
From a hydrological point of view, it is therefore the Yonne which flows precisely where this spectacular ceremony will be held on July 26, that is to say between the Pont d’Austerlitz and the Pont d’Iéna which connect the Trocadéro to the Eiffel Tower and the Champ de Mars. Yonne wanted to affirm its desire to be one of the main players in French sport. Enough to justify that the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will take place on the banks of the Yonne.

“The reflection of the flame will sparkle on the surface of the Yonne”.
On July 26, 2024, each icaunais will have ” the pride of seeing its river carry the athletes and the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron, probably at the top of the Eiffel Tower. During the Olympic and Paralympic fortnights, in the City of Light, the reflection of the flame will sparkle on the surface of the Yonne”.
Anxious to participate in the success of this planetary event, Yonne immediately applied to obtain the “Terre des Jeux” label from the Organizing Committee of the Paris Olympic Games and receive the baton of the flame. And it’s done, Yonne has proudly carried the Terre de Jeux 2024 label since November 2019 and has officially become a Stage Department for the Torch Relay. Seven municipalities have been selected for this relay en route to the capital: Saint-Fargeau, Sens, Chablis, Avallon, Migennes, Vézelay and Auxerre which will therefore be a stage city on Thursday July 11, 2024.
On the strength of this double Olympic recognition, Yonne intends to give new impetus to the whole of the department by creating a territorial brand with the objective of promoting the Icaunese DNA: Yonne 24.

Seven sites labeled “Terres de jeux” have been selected in Yonne to host sports delegations from 2022 and enable them to train in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games. The project, led by the Department of Yonne, the Committee Departmental Olympic and Sports and in partnership with Yonne Tourisme, is sponsored by the sports journalist Nelson Monfort. Rich in its assets and ideally located at the gates of Paris, the Yonne offers suitable spaces and is already perfecting its equipment for this major event. In addition to serving as an Olympic preparation center, the infrastructures will also be able to benefit Icaun athletes and why not attract many athletes to the department.
