For the fire brigades of the Kirchdorf district, the week began with a demanding extinguishing operation. Clouds of smoke rose above the Weißenberg, which is located between Hinterstoder and Klaus on the Pyhrnbahn at an altitude of 820 meters. The steep terrain and the fact that the emergency services are dealing with several embers makes extinguishing work more difficult, according to the district fire brigade command in the followingnoon. “It’s not a big fire, but lots of little embers,” says Helmut Berc in an interview with nachrichten.at.
Useful helper
Mountain rescue was called in to help secure the firefighters. In addition, the police and army helped with the firefighting with two helicopters each. The drone, which was able to quickly localize the embers with an integrated thermal imaging camera, also proved to be a useful helper from the air. Helmut Berc and his comrades can only speculate regarding the cause of the fire. “In any case, it’s terribly dry in the forest, it’s also windy, so a small trigger is enough,” he says. The site covers an area of 200 by 100 meters.

Lightning strike started forest fire
According to the district fire service, the forest fire in Karlstein an der Thaya (Waidhofen ad Thaya district) last Thursday was “with a very high probability” triggered by lightning. More than 100 helpers were on duty in the sometimes impassable terrain to put out the fire. A threatening spread of the flames was prevented.
The fire brigade reported on Monday that the lightning strike had already occurred regarding 24 hours before the fire broke out. It was probably first to a embers formation in one of the rootstocks. Strong winds on Thursday are likely to have favored the spread of the flames. 14 fire brigades responded.
