Women shouldn’t be ashamed

I recently met a young woman, a former graduate student of mine, who was traveling with her two preschool children. When I asked what job she was doing at the moment, she answered me very hesitantly: I’m at home with my children, but actually … Yes, there should still be women who want to shape the first years of their children themselves.

They hardly dare to say it, because normally they are smiled at, reprimanded or threatened with poverty in old age (these threats seem to know exactly what the pension system will look like in 30 or 40 years). For all those who have not yet thought through the idea of the Berndorf model: It offers the opportunity to stay at home for the first few years. It’s not a rule, not a herd reward, not even a recommendation! And perhaps the view will arise that raising children and running a household are just as important and valuable jobs as sitting in an office or at the cash register. Then you would no longer have to be ashamed if you like being at home with the children.
