Strong beer was allegedly invented as a liquid fasting food in the monasteries of the Middle Ages. Back then, everyone drank beer because it was healthier than water – it contained hardly any germs because it was heated during its production. One can therefore say that at that time whole generations lived constantly in mild delirium. Strong beer was and is nutritious, it has almost twice as many calories as wheat beer, an original gravity of between 16 and 18 percent and a high alcohol content, namely at least 6.5 percent by volume. For the monasteries, which have always been famous for their breweries, the strong beer was a welcome extra income, as it sold well, and not just among the common people. This is still the case today, and because people love competition, they like to try their hand at brewing an even stronger strong beer. In the conventional brewing process, it comes up once morest its limits. With its Schorschbock 57, the Schorschbräu brewery from Gunzenhausen has brewed the strongest strong beer in the world to date, it contains 57.5 percent alcohol. For years, the Middle Franconians fought a long-distance duel with the Scottish brewery Brewdog, which brought strong beers like “Sink the Bismarck” (41 percent) or “The End of History” (55 percent) onto the market. “Armageddon” by Brewmeister with 65 percent is not considered a beer – it was mixed with distilled alcohol.
