Kick-off event to discuss AI developments in the House of Representatives
Vienna (PK) – Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently raising more questions than there are answers, said the President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, in his words of welcome to the Parliamentary Forum “Effects of AI on Society and Democracy” scheduled for today. The topic of AI has been moving politics and society like no other since the beginning of the industrial revolution and will undoubtedly remain at the top of the list of important topics that also need to be dealt with by legislation. The Austrian Parliament will therefore deal with the question of AI in a cross-party manner next year and will go into more detail on individual questions in further events. Today is therefore the start of a whole series of events.
It is currently still completely open which answers the new developments in AI require not only from society but also from legislation, and what specifically needs to be done. The Austrian parliament must therefore be more than ever a place for discussion and to face the questions raised by the rapid advances in AI applications, said Sobotka. He is therefore pleased that top-class experts have been able to be won over to make their knowledge in these subject areas available to Parliament, and that representatives of all parliamentary groups have accepted the invitation. The questions at the event ranged from the challenges of AI for society and the economy to the legal framework provided by the EU and what AI means for political participation and democratic processes.
