The two supporting organizations will receive 1.2 million euros for this, and the project will also grow by two locations to 28 throughout Austria. This was announced by Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) on Monday at a press conference in Bregenz. The budget for measures once morest male violence has been increased from four to seven million euros this year. “StoP” uses low-threshold campaigns, door talks and events to raise awareness in the neighborhood, in administration, in kindergartens, in open youth work, but also in football clubs and at markets, and in this way wants to promote civil courage. The initiative is carried out throughout Austria by the Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters (AÖF) in cooperation with other partners, in Vorarlberg the Institute for Social Services (IfS) is responsible. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, around one million women in Austria have experienced physical violence from a partner or ex-partner, and around twice as many have been affected by psychological violence.
Since the start of the pilot project in Vienna in 2019, work has been going on to roll out “StoP” across the board. There are now 25 locations, and two more are to be added in Lustenau and Feldkirch. In addition, “StoP” will also be established in Belgium, France, Romania and the Czech Republic in the next two years, it said. Because the project, which originated in Hamburg, enjoys a high reputation at European level. “Other countries are copying this from us because it works,” said Social Affairs Minister Rauch. The EU comparison shows that Austria has a problem. The focus is on prevention, in addition to the image of men, the focus is primarily on protecting victims, said Rauch, referring to numerous measures taken by the federal government.
“We want to bring the topic into the public arena,” explained the minister. Because most violence in the neighboring apartment does not go completely unnoticed. “There is an attitude and it’s fundamentally wrong: you don’t listen and don’t get involved,” said Rauch. Violence is never a private matter, you have to show potential perpetrators that their behavior will not be tolerated. So far, “StoP” has reached 60,000 people. “Couragement means taking action, not putting yourself in danger,” emphasized IfS coordinator Nikola Furtenbach. That might mean throwing in a flyer with help contacts, calling the police or speaking to the abusive good friend regarding his behavior. As before, two thirds of the women affected by violence tried to deal with the problem themselves. At the same time, tackling violence must be understood as a task for society as a whole.
Bregenz Mayor Michael Ritsch (SPÖ) wanted the state to participate financially in the project, which is currently borne 60: 40 percent by the federal government and the local community. Vice Mayor Sandra Schoch (Greens), Vice President of the State Parliament, hoped that other communities would follow, especially in rural areas. Schoch reminded that violent men live “among us”. Here is an appeal to the men: “Keep your distance, start a conversation if you notice.” The community level is a key area to break the cycle of violence. Feldkirch’s responsible city councilor Julia Berchtold (ÖVP) emphasized that the topic runs through all social classes.
