Creating Safe and Inclusive Public Spaces for Women in Brussels: Demands of Women100 Activists

About fifty demonstrators demanded on Saturday, at the Mont des Arts in Brussels, a public space that is more inclusive and better adapted to the needs of women. Under the slogan “Proud-Noisy-Visible!”, the activists of “Women100″ (W100), a platform made up of women from all over the Brussels-Capital Region, recalled their desire to create links and amplify voices and the actions of Brussels women.

“In Brussels, nine out of ten women are still victims of intimidation in the street or on public transport,” said Nadia Hadad, of W100. “Studies show that women use public space less often, and in other ways. They often have to adapt their movements to the circumstances, for example when street lighting or in parks is weak, or because of an unsafe layout of the space. Women are also much less represented in the public space, since barely 7% of the streets in Brussels bear the names of women”.

“We must also take into account the needs of more vulnerable groups of women, such as migrant or racialized women, women with disabilities, single mothers or LGBTQI+ women. Real prevention is needed, as well as a police approach to sexual violence in public spaces, awareness campaigns and training, in order to change attitudes”.
