Alan Wake’s legendary opening line, straight from the pen of Stephen King, cost Remedy Entertainment just $1. We tell you all the details, below!
Stephen Kingthe legendary writer behind It, Carrie, The glow and many more classics, gave Remedy the rights to use a quote that Alan Wake opens for just $1. The survival horror game kicks off with the character’s voiceover quoting the author in a description of what nightmares really mean. so the boss Remedy Sam Lake told that to King he had liked the idea very much and so he gave in for a symbolic sum.
Lake said he wanted to kick off the game with a quote from King because its style fits so closely with the game’s creepy supernatural horror. The author agreed.”When creating the original Alan Wake, I really, really wanted to use a quote from him to start it off.“, said Lake In an interview. “As I understand it, he wanted $1 for us to have the rights to use. [Fue] very generous“.
“Stephen King once wrote: ‘Nightmares exist outside of logic and there is little pleasure in explanations; are antithetical to the poetry of fear‘ says the opening of Alan Wake, where the protagonist drives a car. “In a horror story, the victim keeps asking ‘why?’ But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn’t be. The unanswered mystery is what lasts in us the longest, and it is what we will remember in the end. My name is Alan Wake, I’m a writer.“.
Alan Wake and its sequel feature numerous tributes to King throughout the game, along with other influences such as the works of H.P. Lovecraft and tv shows Twin Peaks y The Twilight Zone.
King’s quote comes from an article written for Entertainment Weekly in 2008. Entitled “Why Hollywood can’t do horror“, discusses the failures of big budget studios to adequately capture fear while seeking mass audiences.
The game has a sequel on the way for current generation consoles.
