Political Pressure and Controversy Surrounding the Foreign Minister: Explained and Analyzed

This Sunday, opposition and majority partners have already increased the pressure in their Sunday statements and are awaiting convincing explanations from the minister. Apologies will not be enough for the PS, warned Paul Magnette. “If faults have been committed, they must be clearly identified. We need to know what the minister will do to avoid this in the future. (…) It is an open secret that Madame Lahbib acted on the orders of Georges-Louis Bouchez”, he explains.

“At her request, she attacked the Brussels government, where the MR is in opposition. They instrumentalized this case once morest political adversaries. Unlike Bouchez, this is not my way of doing politics. Mrs. Lahbib must demonstrate that she is an independent minister and not the spokesperson for her party president”.

Wouter De Vriendt, federal deputy Groen, does not intend to give Hadja Lahbib any favors and seems to make it a matter of government. “I say it very clearly as a member of the majority: the foreign minister will have to provide an explanation and admit his mistakes. Otherwise, we will not be able to continue”, he warns.

In opposition, Theo Francken does not mince his words and goes one step further. He believes that the minister is not “competent” enough for the job.

“She didn’t tell the truth in Parliament. From the beginning, it has been clear to the N-VA that the granting of these visas to such figures of this political regime is totally unacceptable. The minister cannot remain in place”, assures the nationalist deputy, who therefore demands his resignation. He predicts, however, that Vivaldi will end up turning a blind eye and keeping the minister on board the executive.

The session in the Foreign Relations Committee will begin at 5 p.m. and not at 2 p.m. as initially planned, the minister attending a summit on Russia in Luxembourg in the morning.
