For having criticized the indecent increase in the salaries of European Union civil servants, our journalist Jean Quatremer found himself accused of misinformation by the Commission… which does not hesitate to twist reality.
It is not every day that the Commission accuses a Liberation journalist of disinformation, exactly as it did with each article by Boris Johnson when he was a correspondent in Brussels in the early 1990s. However, to my knowledge, I I did not become an agent of Europhobic populism, a king of fake news, unlike Johnson whose lies and inventions were proven. What happened for the European executive to mobilize to slay articles that it considers “false and misleading”?
In Liberation on June 19, I published a “note”, an editorial if you prefer, in which I was indignant at the lavish increases enjoyed by civil servants and members of the European institutions, but also at their indecent salaries. I estimated, in particular, that the automatic indexation for 2022 and 2023, over two years therefore, would reach 13%. An estimate, since we will not know until January 2024 the final figure which will be applied retroactively to the year 2023: it will be calculated by Eurostat taking into account the purchasing power in ten public functions and inflation in Brussels and Luxembourg-city, higher than in the two countries as a whole.
