In February 1993, nature conservation work began in Austria’s second oldest national park – following the Hohe Tauern – and Austria’s first cross-border national park. Today it offers a diverse visitor program with numerous excursions throughout the year. From now on, a newly designed outdoor area at the National Park Center in Illmitz invites the youngest to linger and discover the habitats.

The kids clearly had fun with what was on offer in the newly designed outdoor area.

For the opening of the new outdoor area and to celebrate the 30th anniversary, the National Park invited to a family festival in Illmitz last Saturday. The duo “Manuel Hafner & Nadja’s Cello” provided the musical accompaniment. The national park is a source of identity for Burgenland, emphasized Governor Hans Peter Doskozil during the celebrations: “The Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a unique and diverse cultural and natural landscape and is closely related to the development in the region. Really great work is being done here – from natural area management to the implementation of research and educational topics.”

Illmitz: National Park celebrates 30 years. The Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The newly designed outdoor area was also presented as part of a family celebration.

On the one hand, everyone involved is concerned with preserving this diverse natural, species and life diversity for future generations. On the other hand, the national park has developed from a source of inspiration to a powerful engine for nature and eco-tourism, according to the state governor: “40,000 visitors come to the national park center every year. Another 1,300 take part in excursions and school programs. The national park is an internationally recognized model for sustainable and responsible tourism as a partner for nature conservation. It is of inestimable value for the protection and preservation of biodiversity and also fulfills an educational mission. It is an important economic factor and with currently 28 employees and around 30 rangers it is a large employer in the region.”

In addition to Doskozil, Deputy Governor Astrid Eisenkopf, National Park Directors Johannes Ehrenfeldner (Burgenland) and Matthaea Kulcsárné Roth (Hungary), Christian Holzer, Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, David Simon, Pannatura (Esterhazy Foundation), Harald Ladich, Business Agency Burgenland GmbH and numerous other guests at the family festival.

The family-friendly outdoor area, which is open to those interested to linger, was implemented with funds from the Interreg project ECOREGION SK-AT with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the field of ecotourism in the border region of Slovakia and Austria and promoting the region as a valuable local recreation and excursion destination. “Thanks to the successful projects, especially INTERREG, in recent years, the National Park Center has finally become what I wished for: a meeting place. The national park does not belong to the national park administration, but to all people. The greatest challenge for the near future is to be present in the minds – especially of the younger generation”, emphasizes National Park Director Johannes Ehrenfeldner.

LIFE project “Pannonic Salt” starts in September

The highly endowed LIFE Pannonic Salt 2023 project will start on September 1, 2023, which includes key measures to raise the groundwater level to save the salt lakes. “The international cooperation works very well. Our joint efforts to preserve and improve the salt lakes are a good example of this,” says Deputy Governor Astrid Eisenkopf. As part of the LIFE project, they want to protect these sensitive habitats in particular. This involves hydraulic engineering measures, measures in agriculture as well as information and awareness-raising. A few weeks ago, the EU promised funding of 12 million euros.

On the Burgenland side, seven municipalities are part of the Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park: Andau, Apetlon, Illmitz, Neusiedl/See, Podersdorf, Tadten and Weiden/See.
