(CNN) A freight train derailed around 6 a.m. Monday morning in Montana, causing a bridge to collapse and several cars to fall into the Yellowstone River below.

The railroad company said the damaged carriages were laden with molten sulfur and asphalt.

Two cars loaded with sodium hydrogen sulfate were among the derailed cars, but they did not fall into the river. An initial air test confirmed no leaks of material associated with the two vehicles.

Local disaster management officials said several tankers were damaged and oil products were leaking out.

In an initial statement, the railway company said some of the derailed cars were carrying dangerous goods, but the crew was safe and no injuries were reported. It announced that it will cooperate with federal and local authorities to investigate the environmental impact and formulate appropriate recovery and restoration plans.

The cause of the derailment is currently unknown. Neighbors were warned to stay away from the railroad bridge.

Governor Gianforte tweeted on Wednesday that he was monitoring the situation closely.
