On June 6, the Labor Inspectorate’s Welfare at Work Division carried out checks on construction sites throughout Belgium. 176 contractors were examined and nearly half of the infractions noted concerned the risk of falling from heights.

This inspection campaign was carried out with a particular focus on the safety problems at the origin of very serious work accidents. Namely the risk of falls from heights, the risk of being buried in an excavation or foundation pit, or even lung problems related to exposure to quartz dust.

176 entrepreneurs were checked on Tuesday June 6 by the Labor Inspectorate. And a long series of violations has been noted by the body. Thus, nearly one in two offenses concerned the risk of falling from a height, either because of a breach of the scaffolding, or following the absence of collective protection once morest these falls. And in half of the findings of this type of fault, the risks were so high that the activity at height was forced to stop.

The Labor Inspectorate recalls that falls are the leading cause of the most serious work accidents and that nearly one in three very serious work accidents (fatal or resulting in complete permanent disability) is due to a fall.

The other violations observed relate to a smaller number of construction sites: exposure to quartz dust (9%), unsecured excavations or foundation pits (6%), the fact that the contractor or a subcontractor not complying with Belgian legislation was not excluded from the worksite (6%), or even the absence of social facilities, such as the absence of toilets with flushing water (5%).
