After seven months without a new Marvel series, Disney+ put an end to the wait by launching episode 1 of Secret Invasion this Wednesday, June 21. Exit the superheroes, the series is this time centered on Nick Fury, still played by Samuel L. Jackson. Leaving for space to escape his problems, he returns to Earth to thwart an imminent threat: Skrulls have decided to destroy humanity to settle on Earth. Something that Nick Fury and his allies including Talos and Maria Hill will try to prevent at all costs. Darker than previous projects around the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Secret Invasion also allows us to discover more regarding the mysterious former director of SHIELD.

While some familiar faces are back to assist Nick Fury on this high-risk mission, he’s also surrounded by new characters never before seen in the MCU. Among them is Sonya Falsworth. The latter, an MI6 agent, will prove to be important in the series and has a link with Fury. It is the brilliant Olivia Colman (seen in the series The Crown and Heartstopper and Oscar winner for her role in the film The Favorite) who embodies it. On the occasion of the release of the series, Télé-Loisirs interviewed the two stars of fiction. We would have liked to talk to them regarding the evolution of Nick Fury, the other actors in the cast or their on-screen dynamics, but only four minutes of interview were granted to us. Télé-Loisirs: how did you feel regarding playing Nick Fury once more?
Samuel L. Jackson: I’m very happy to be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No one told me my appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home didn’t count! (he’s laughing). It’s great to come back and do a series that is centered around the world of Nick Fury, this hidden world. It was also great to be able to introduce new characters that are part of it such as Sonya, find out what Nick does when he’s not on SABER or in the field, find out if he has a house or not, s he lives in an apartment. It’s really great to be able to add layers to the character of Nick Fury and to be able to reveal them to viewers.
“No matter the role, yes, I want it”: Olivia Colman immediately agreed to join the cast of Secret Invasion
Olivia, you’re in your first role in the MCU. How did you end up playing Sonya?
Olivia Colman: I don’t remember exactly when I got the call but it came from my agent. I didn’t know who I was going to play originally but I immediately said, “Yes! Absolutely ! No matter the role, yes, I want it!”. It was only followingwards that I knew I was going to play Sonya. I thought to myself, “Oh my God, I’m going to have superpowers!” so I was a little disappointed to learn that no. I thought regarding it a lot followingwards and I thought to myself that it’s actually not common to introduce more mature and older superheroes, they are usually rather young. But I was very excited to play Sonya, I love that she is extremely evil. She always finds things funny even when she acts horrible. She’s great and it was a lot of fun to play. And then I loved working with Sam, it was incredible. They really welcomed me with open arms. When we say “Marvel is a big family”, it’s totally true. They are all nice and you really feel like part of a team.

Samuel L. Jackson: And then what’s great is that now only you can play this character.
Olivia Colman: That’s great! They won’t replace me for a young girl then (she laughs).
If you might play any other Marvel character, who would you choose?
Samuel L. Jackson: I would like to play my character! I want to be Nick Fury forever. I love what Nick does. I don’t need superpowers or anything. I like that he’s a regular dude who holds his own among all these characters because they respect him and respect his opinions.
Olivia Colman: I just know I wouldn’t want to wear a leotard but I like capes! (she laughs)
