37 Years Ago: The Heartbreaking Story of Leaving Lives Behind at Sea

Thrissur ∙ On hearing regarding the Titan probe that took death to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, Ramachandran (Rama) felt searing in his mind. In the past, we will remember the lives that had to be left to die in the deep sea. Ramachandran is a bystander who had to helplessly leave the drowned people in the sea if the titan was going to explode without anyone knowing.

Ramachandran, a member of the Anikot Kallazhi family from Palakkad Kotai, became a deep-sea diver while in Singapore. Later he became an expert in a company that welded and fixed deep-sea cables and pipes. Rama was working 37 years ago, when technology was not so advanced. The journey is in a special probe under the sea. The oxygen hose will be connected to this probe from the oxygen plant on the barge. It will stay under the sea for up to a week. After returning to sea level, it can only come out following spending several days in a glass probe (chamber) and correcting the pressure difference.

The ship Rama was working on had received 2 storm warnings. The ship was brought close to the shore but nothing happened. The next day, when the warning came once more, the captain decided to stay at sea, assuming that nothing would happen. But at night the storm came. At this time, there were 3 people in the chamber that rose from the bottom of the sea. If they come out, they cannot withstand the pressure difference and die. The air supply to the chamber was from the ship. As the sea became rough, it was decided to bring everyone on board to the shore by helicopter. But the chamber cannot be transported by helicopter. Finally it was decided to abandon ship with this chamber.

It was Rama who informed the people in the chamber. When they were sure that they would not escape, they pasted papers on the glass chamber where they wrote that they loved their wife and children and that God would be with them to raise them well. A man wrote a list of toys that were supposed to be given to children.

The captain was not the only one on board the helicopter. ‘You go. It was my fault for choosing to ignore the warning and continue at sea. This is how I atone for it’ – he said in a soft voice over the wireless. The helicopter returned. The very next day I heard that the ship and the glass chamber had sunk. Even following many years, Rama remains in the same scene. It’s just that robots are going deep today to fix cables and pipes.
