The Japanese authorities revealed that a woman in her seventies died in Ibaraki Prefecture (northeast of Tokyo) following she was infected with the “Oz” virus, making it the first death in the world due to infection transmitted by ticks.

Health authorities said that the virus was discovered in the country in 2018, and although there may be human and animal infections, there has been no confirmation of the virus appearing on anyone yet.
The woman went to a medical institution in the summer of 2022 following she developed symptoms including fever and fatigue, according to the provincial government and the Ministry of Health.
She was diagnosed with pneumonia, but following her condition worsened, she was hospitalized, and an engorged tick was found in the upper part of her right thigh.
The woman died of myocarditis 26 days following being admitted to the hospital.
It is noteworthy that there is no vaccine once morest the “Oz” virus, which has not been discovered outside Japan, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo.
The institute said that infection with the virus does not necessarily lead to death, but stressed the need to conduct more studies on its symptoms and risks.
