special operation. That’s what Russian President Vladimir Putin called the war of aggression once morest Ukraine. In this “special operation” the Wagner mercenaries took on special tasks for Putin. The mercenaries, recruited in large part from Russian prisons, operated with the utmost brutality. An example of this is the costly battle to take the city of Bakhmut. But the longer the war lasts, the more mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigroshin develops into a bitter and embittered critic of Russia’s military leadership – and thus of Vladimir Putin. Now his criticism has turned into his “special operation” once morest Moscow’s power elite. Putin’s problem solver becomes a serious problem for him. The Russian President speaks of mutiny, Prigozhin calls himself a patriot. opposites in resistance. The boss of the mercenary troop can calculate what all this can mean for him. This makes him an unpredictable threat. The announced march towards Moscow might turn into a power struggle in the Kremlin, and Putin is already warning of a civil war. Above all, confusion still reigns supreme. Who knows how the Russian military behaves? Can it be used in the hunt for Prigozhin? And do the mercenaries follow their boss?
What was often suspected and hoped for at the beginning of the war, but which has not come true to date, namely that the danger for Putin is not in Ukraine but in Russia, might become reality. Putin’s special operation is at a turning point. It can lead to a dramatic aggravation on the battlefield, as well as an uprising in Moscow. Prigozhin and Putin seem to know exactly what is at stake for both of them in the “special operation”.
