An achievement for medicine! 2-year-old boy beats cancer thanks to experimental treatment
Noah Langlois is a little boy of only two years of age, who has earned the love and respect of thousands of doctors around the world. Even with all the odds stacked once morest him, he defied the odds for survival and is currently recovering from stage 3 liver cancer.
Noah was born premature, and only 25 weeks pregnant his mother gave birth to him, for which he had to be in intensive care, and during the first months he presented various complications.
However, it was not until he was one year old that a huge tumor was detected, and unfortunately following the studies, the diagnosis was discouraging, it was carcinogenic and it occupied 90% of his liver.
“He had hepatoblastoma, which is the most common tumor that occurs in children, however, his case was a bit more complex, because at the time of diagnosis he already had many comorbidities,” said Jennifer Garcia, Ph.D., from Holtz Children’ s Hospital, located in Miami, United States.

At that time, they started with the treatment, but the chemotherapies did not work and the tumor continued to grow, the chances of performing a transplant were increasingly reduced. Which is why the team of medical specialists at Holtz Hospital proposed an experimental treatment called Y-90 embolization, which had only been used in adult patients.
“Y-90 embolization is an injection of microspheres of radioactive material, these microspheres are anchored, the vessels that carry blood to the tumor are covered. By blocking the blood supply to the tumor, they cause the tumor to suffer from a lack of blood flow and shrink. At the same time, it deposits, right in the bed of the tumor, a radioactive material that produces focused radiation”, said Juan Pablo Solano, a doctor specializing in pediatric intensive care.
Fortunately, the treatment worked and the tumor managed to shrink, making him a candidate for a transplant. After a year and three months in the hospital, he will finally be able to go home, albeit with some specialist care and monitoring over the next few years to make sure the cancer doesn’t come back.
A significant advance for medicine, and a true gift of life for Noah, a baby who clung to the fight at all times and who demonstrated admirable strength and courage.
