Deutsche Bahn is aiming for a renovation offensive at the train stations. Around every third train station is to be brought into better condition by 2030. The German Press Agency learned that there was agreement with the Federal Ministry of Transport.

The train stops at around 5400 stations. 700 of them belong to the railways, including the station building. Many of the other buildings were sold during the rail reform in the 1990s.

Now 1,800 stations are to be renovated by 2030 – including those where the buildings do not belong to the railways. It is said that this restructuring plan would reach more than two thirds of customers. Some stations will also be improved with the general overhaul of particularly important routes. The first general renovation is planned between Mannheim and Frankfurt in the second half of the year, and dozens are to follow. During a general renovation, an important route will be closed for six months.

Billion investments needed

The railway network is considered to be in need of renovation. The condition of the infrastructure is also a decisive factor for the group’s weak punctuality values. Deutsche Bahn also assumes that the network will have significantly more capacity following the renovations and that ultimately more trains will be able to run reliably on it.

Deutsche Bahn wants to invest seven billion euros in infrastructure in 2024, nine billion euros in 2025 and twelve billion euros in 2026. At the end of March, the German government determined that Deutsche Bahn would need around 45 billion euros to cover investment needs by 2027.
