A MANAL delegation and its Chinese partner inquire about the progress rate of the Gara Djebilet mine project

TINDOUF – A delegation made up of officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the public group Manadjim El Djazair (MANAL) and the Chinese consortium (CMH), inspected, on Saturday, the progress of the development works of the Gara Djebilet mine in the west of the wilaya of Tindouf.

During this visit, the delegation inquired regarding the process of extracting raw iron at this mining site, which covers an area of ​​115,000 hectares. Today, only 500 hectares are exploited to open the mine.

“Today, we visited the Gara Djebilet mine with our Chinese partner to inquire regarding the progress of the work in this mine,” MANAL Group CEO Mohamed Sakhr Harami said in a statement. statement to the press.

According to Mr. Harami, the raw material extracted from this mine will be used to supply the factory which will be built in the city of Bechar with the same partner, to produce, first, 500,000 tons of semi-finished products using nearly one (1) million tons of raw iron.

The production of the complex will have to reach, following the completion of the railway line which will connect the mine to the factory, nearly 10 million tons by using approximately 20 million tons of raw material.

For his part, the president of “CMH”, Zhou Zhipeng, recalled that “work on this site began in July 2022. We are here today to inquire regarding the progress of the work as well as than progress made in terms of infrastructure,” he continued.

“We are working with the National Iron and Steel Company (FERAAL) for the preparation and development of the Gara Djebilet mine,” he added.

In turn, the CEO of the National Iron and Steel Company (FERAAL), Ahmed Benabbes indicated that the depth of the Gara Djebilet mine does not exceed 12 meters and that “the operating costs are the lowest in the world”.

As for the quality of the iron in this mine, Mr. Benabbes pointed out that it was made up of “nearly 57% raw iron and 0.8% phosphorus, recalling in this context that “the manufacture of steel requires a phosphorus level not exceeding 0.1%”. “We are working to guarantee a better quality of product to do this”, he assured.

Concerning the project of railway lines linking Gara Djebilet to Béchar, the CEO of FERAAL announced the signing of a contract for the construction of a 200 km section of this track from Béchar, mentioning another contract which will be signed in two weeks for the construction of 170 km from Tindouf to Béchar.

The transport of the raw material from Gara Djebilet Ouest to the Béchar factory is done by trucks pending the construction of the railway line to connect the two sites in July 2026, he recalled.
