The company is “discussing” the future of E3.

The Entertainment Software Association insists that E3 isn’t dead yet, though the City of Los Angeles Board of Tourism Commissioners disagrees.

A post from ResetEra shared a clip from the last board meeting, which appears to confirm the death of the once-beloved gaming convention. A footnote in the convention sales meeting filing, dated June 12, says “includes E3 cancellations for 2024 and 2025.” While that didn’t take into account his future in 2026 and beyond, that seemed like the final nail in the coffin. After all, everyone seemed to get by without E3 this year and last year. Even before the pandemic, the convention was going through a tough time, but now it seemed almost certain that we wouldn’t see its big comeback.

Never say never, apparently, as an ESA spokesperson tried to stifle any premature mourning (or celebration). In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, the trade body says it is “currently having conversations regarding E3 2024 (and beyond), adding that “no final decisions regarding the event have been made for the moment”.

That’s a pretty vague answer to a near-definitive footnote from the Los Angeles Office of Tourism, but it might mean a whole host of things for the future of E3. In my opinion, there is a good chance that we will see the return of a digital version of the event next year, thus eliminating the need for a physical presence and all the financial problems that come with it. That would make sense given ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis’ comments earlier this year regarding the likelihood of an E3 2024.

“We are committed to providing an industry platform for marketing and meetings, but we want to be sure we find the right balance to meet industry needs,” he told GamesIndustry.biz shortly following. the cancellation of this year’s E3 in March. “We will definitely listen and make sure what we want to offer meets those needs and at that time we will have more news to share.

It seems to me that a digital-only event is the most likely future of E3 right now, but even if it happens, will it bother people that much? Reception to its online presence last year has been mixed to say the least, and our online editor Fraser Brown said he doesn’t think the event should ever go back to being an in-person event. “I’m glad E3 is going digital once more, but I don’t think it will survive in this form forever,” he wrote last year.

As for me, I miss the chaotic weirdness of E3 very much, but I don’t think we’ll ever find it once more, even if it returns with a bang. We’ve certainly been treated to a few quirks with this year’s Summer Game Fest and beyond — odd Nic Cage appearances and sea shanties abound — but as editor Rich Stanton wrote in March : The disappearance of E3 is a real shame.
