1. Brown spots

Brown spots, which occur in more than 50% of diabetics, are usually seen on the shins and legs, and often appear on the arms and body. It is characterized by repeated occurrence without any symptoms and disappearing over 1 to 2 years. The Korea Diabetes Association recommends that you get tested if you have brown spots that you haven’t had before, as it might be a sign of diabetes.

2. Purulent boils

If you have diabetes, your immune system is weakened, making it difficult to protect your body from germs. Bacterial infections easily occur, as well as boils, and once festering, it does not heal well. In particular, wet areas such as the armpits and groin are more susceptible to boils, so care should be taken to avoid dampness of the skin.

3. Itching

Itching is usually relieved by applying a moisturizing cream, but depending on the symptoms, a steroid cream may be used. In particular, itching is the most severe when you go to bed, so it is good to moisturize thoroughly before going to bed.

4. Hand and foot blisters

Blisters, which occur mostly on the hands and feet, usually heal naturally in 2 to 5 weeks. Almost no traces are left. However, if the blisters do not go away following a while, there may be something wrong with your body, so you should visit a hospital for an accurate examination and diagnosis.

5. Leg/foot wounds

The importance of foot care for diabetics cannot be overemphasized. This is because even a small wound can result in the worst case of amputation of the foot if mismanaged. In particular, it is more dangerous if you have athlete’s foot, toenail disease, or arteriosclerosis, so you need to be careful.
