With a small act, Vice Mayor Daniel Passerini inaugurated on Friday night the enhancement of the world tour of Sarmiento Park in the city of Córdoba. The Ferris wheel, also known as the Eiffel Wheel, now has state-of-the-art lighting, and will rotate for a few minutes a day at sunset.

As a first measure, the metallic structure and the mechanical part were recovered. Through the municipal entity Biocor, which manages the Biodiversity Park, the engine was restored and repaired.

The new lighting system was tested on Thursday, which was formally enabled on Friday night.

A system of 28 RgbW high power projectors with IEP’s computerized DMX control system was installed. “This system allows more than a million color combinations, and also allows pastel colors to be achieved due to the presence of the white LED. It is one of the most modern technologies in the world in regards to ornamental lighting of heritage sites”, they pointed out from the Biocor entity.

In addition, it is accompanied by typical French music, which is emitted from the Escaleras del Coniferal. At the top of those stairs is the best point to appreciate the wheel all illuminated and turning.

The music system is provisional. The placement of final equipment will be put out to tender, which will be coordinated with the start of the world tour, which will rotate for regarding five minutes at sunset.

In winter, the scheduled time is at 7:00 p.m. But as the days get longer, it will change.

Due to the characteristics of the lighting system, the wheel changes color. It goes from violet to blue, then adds red and white to be dyed with the shades of the flag of the province of Córdoba.

But it keeps changing, going through pastels, until it is sepia, which is the tone chosen to illuminate it when it is stopped.

In the Municipality they bet that the illuminated wheel will be a new landmark of the city, especially from the postcard that forms in the Escaleras del Coniferal.

The wheel

The Ferris wheel is known as the “Eiffel wheel”, although there is no certainty that it was manufactured by the famous metallurgical workshops of Gustave Eiffel, builder of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It arrived in Córdoba in 1918 from the province of Tucumán, which had bought it in 1916 but had not installed it.

It became a postcard of Sarmiento Park, but began a process of deterioration that gradually destroyed it. At the beginning of this millennium, it was totally in ruins. So much so that it was not possible to restore it, but rather had to be rebuilt.

The work was carried out in 2003, as part of the municipality’s concession to the Superpark. The remains were disassembled, and the Lozada Chávez Engineering company built each of the pieces that allowed the reproduction of the circular structure of 12 meters in diameter. The 20 squares were also replicated, but instead of being made of wood like the originals, they were made of steel. However, it was once once more abandoned.
