TV channels in decline…

Little by little, French television channels are disappearing from the small screen. In 2022, in fact, the French watched television for 3:26 every day. This is 32 minutes less than in 2020 and 15 minutes less than in 2021. Even more worrying for television channels, the viewing time varies depending on the population. Among people aged 15-34, it is 1 hour 25 minutes on average, compared to 5 hours 23 minutes for people aged over 50. This is proof that it’s not going to get any better for tv channels.

Just look at the remote controls of connected televisions to be convinced. The keys allowing direct access to streaming video services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney + are now in a very good place. As for Smart TV interfaces, they also relegate traditional television channels to second place in favor of SVOD services. “This is a major issue for DTT channels. Smart TVs, interfaces in general, like Chromecast or Apple TV, and even operator boxes, are increasingly organizing their screens. reception like an application store. And these interfaces always favor paid services”, points out Roch-Olivier Maistre, the president of the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (Arcom).

This basic trend also worries the big bosses of the television channels. “We can’t put tomorrow in their only choice of what the French watch. We need the boxes, on condition of not being relegated, in particular behind the American platforms”, apprehended Nicolas de Tavernost in the columns of Figaro at the end of 2022, by mentioning relations with telecom operators who market internet boxes giving access to a television service.

… And increasingly popular SVoD services

In just over 10 years, SVoD has become the favorite leisure of the French. In France, in September 2022, 53.2% of French people, including 62.9% of 15-24 year olds, used at least one subscription streaming video platform. That’s not all , 47.3% of French people subscribe to at least one SVoD service. Moreover, users have an average of 1.9 subscriptions to a streaming video platform such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+.

In the hit parade of the most popular SVoD services among the French, we find of course Netflix, on the highest step of the podium, with 65.7% of users between January and September 2022, ahead of Prime Video, 47.5% of users, and Disney+, 34.6% of users.
