Cottbus (ots) – Today, Friday, June 23rd, 2023, is a special day in the history of the Cottbus table: none other than its patron ROLAND KAISER received a symbolic check in the amount of 440,000 euros from the GERMAN FERNSEHLOTTERIE for the tables of the Albert- Schweitzer Family Works Brandenburg eV accepted. The sum goes to the voluntary work of the six food banks and three issuing offices of the non-profit association in Cottbus, Luckau, Lübben, Spremberg, Drebkau and Welzow. But there’s more: just before his sold-out concert in Cottbus’ Spreeauenpark, ROLAND KAISER supported the volunteers in handing out the groceries.

“Those who work at the Tafel Cottbus know how important social cohesion and charity are and are committed to helping those who need our support. I am therefore particularly pleased that ROLAND KAISER, together with DEUTSCHE FERNSEHLOTTERIE, is actively supporting voluntary work in Germany At least as much as the food banks of the Albert-Schweitzer-Familienwerk Brandenburg collect in food and pass it on to those in need, the voluntary employees also donate as much time and attention. The food bank movement is not an emergency nail, it is an important and essential building block of social interaction in Lusatia,” emphasizes Christian Kipper, Managing Director of the German TV Lottery.

Kai Noack, managing director of the Albert-Schweitzer-Familienwerk Brandenburg eV and honorary deputy chairman of the Tafel Deutschland eV: “We are accepting the largest donation sum in the history of our Tafel today with Roland, who has been fighting with us for years for the more than 12,000 people which we support with groceries and everyday goods. I am very moved by the generosity he shows to people who are not doing so well in life. I thank him as a friend and on behalf of the Tafel teams for his visit!”

ROLAND KAISER knows poverty not only from stories, but from personal experience. Raised by his foster mother, who worked as a cleaner, he knows what it’s like to have to make do with little. Before he might make a living from his music, he also worked as a telegram messenger at the Berlin Post. His biography has made him particularly sensitive to the needs of people who live on the fringes of our society. “I know how important it is that we support each other unselfishly. I learned early on and internalized that you help where you can,” says ROLAND KAISER.

The relationship between ROLAND KAISER and the Tafel Cottbus is deep and personal: Since 2010, ROLAND KAISER has been an honorary ambassador for the Albert-Schweitzer-Familienwerk Brandenburg eV, the non-profit sponsor of the six Tafel and three issuing offices in Lusatia. In 2013, ROLAND KAISER took over the patronage of the Cottbus table – a role that he filled with enthusiasm and generosity. The stage is just as important to him as talking to people who have to turn every cent three times over. “And that’s exactly what hurts me,” says ROLAND KAISER. “When I see older citizens here who have worked for 45 years and today cannot even afford a cinema ticket or a concert.” When he first visited the Cottbus food bank, he expected to find mainly people who didn’t have a job. “That’s a misconception. Many of the more than 100 Cottbus guests per day have one or even more jobs, but still cannot make a living without help.”

For Kai Noack, the support from Germany’s most traditional social lottery is an overwhelming experience: “We feel deep gratitude for this fabulous donation from DEUTSCHE FERNSEHLOTTERIE. The 440,000 euros are not just a number on a check, but also a symbol that people are still willing are to stand up for one another. The sum does not bog down in the bureaucratic labyrinth, but has already been fully reinvested in the partially outdated infrastructure of the food bank: The issuing offices are given new refrigerated vehicles. The cars that are currently in use are no longer up to date Technology. We are buying more deep-freeze cells and a photovoltaic system, with which we can absorb part of the increased energy costs. We are talking regarding purchases that a non-profit organization cannot afford on its own. Another part is planned for everyone who volunteers Every day, they should be given an appreciation, in the form of a trip or an invitation. But that’s the end of this enormous funding! For the ongoing operating and energy costs, we continue to depend on people supporting us whenever possible. That doesn’t change anything.”

ROLAND KAISER’s visit left a lasting impression on the Tafel staff. “I listen to ROLAND KAISER when I’m cooking, baking, cleaning,” reveals Karin Dyrda, a volunteer at the Cottbus food bank. “I love him more than anything and I am very grateful that I was able to distribute groceries to our guests with him today.” Beate Fielo, deputy team leader of the Tafel Cottbus, adds: “ROLAND KAISER is a great person, totally level-headed, his heart is in the right place!”

Background:

More than 13 million people in Germany are affected by poverty or are directly threatened by it. About two million of them use the help offered by the Tafel. Against the background of the pandemic, the Ukraine war, inflation and rising energy costs, they are currently supporting more people than ever before. On average, this means 50 percent more customers who depend on the offer of help. At the moment, many food banks throughout Germany have reached their personal and structural limits. With the help of its fellow players, the DEUTSCHE FERNSEHLOTTERIE supports the offers of the food banks in Germany with a total of 30 million euros.
