The hot weather of the past few days is prompting home care teams to redouble their efforts to prevent the heat from having harmful effects on vulnerable people.
Nurse Isabel Carpio multiplies her home visits. In particular, she visited Linda Girard, a patient who has serious health problems and who cannot go to the CLSC because of her reduced mobility.
In the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Ile-de-Montréal, 17,000 people are monitored at home and often live alone. Nurses who go to their bedside at least once a week are instructed to check that they are hydrating well and that their home is not at too high a temperature.
“We do prevention, always. We give this advice, to take water, to cool off, ”explained to TVA Nouvelles the nurse clinician Isabel Carpio.
“I come in air conditioned here. I put it in my room because I can’t put it anywhere else and it makes me feel good,” says his patient, Linda Girard.
At the CLSC de Montréal-Nord, another nurse telephones patients who are not being visited today to make sure they are not inconvenienced.
“We will also make sure to properly identify people who are considered vulnerable to be ready in the event of a heat wave,” says the manager of home support at the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, Jenny Gonzalez. .
In the 10 CHSLDs of the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Ile-de-Montréal, 661 residents asked for air conditioning to be installed in their rooms; their request was accepted.
