This weekend the Roller Derby will take place once more in the Wiener Stadthalle. Since the sport is particularly aimed at women and non-binary people, it is no coincidence that the competitions take place in Vienna during the rainbow month of June.

A Viennese roller derby team will also be at the start this weekend. The five teams will compete once morest each other in six games.
Sport since 2011 in Austria
Roller derby is a four-wheel roller skating sport from the United States. Gradually, the full-contact sport has spread beyond the US borders. In 2011, the Vienna Rollergirls, Austria’s first roller derby team, was founded by a small group of women. The club now has 80 members and has two internationally competing teams: the Oysters and the Beasts.

A roller derby game lasts 60 minutes and is divided into two halves of 30 minutes each. There are five people on the field per team. There are four blockers and one attacker. Only the attacker can score points. A point is won if the attacker manages to pass the hips of the opposing team’s players during the two-minute jam without being blocked. A team can score a maximum of four points per round. The team with the most points at the end wins.

Dominated by women
In order to signal to non-binary people that they are welcome in the club, the Vienna Rollergirls later renamed themselves Vienna Roller Derby. For some time the club has also been a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.
It is important for the club members to emphasize that the sport is dominated by women’s teams and not just the women’s version of a sport, as is the case with many other sports. “We are happy regarding skaters who identify as women or who do not want to be classified in a binary gender order,” said a member of the Vienna Roller Derby. The club describes itself as an international sports organization that acts democratically and is committed to values such as equality, justice and diversity.
