Researchers have discovered new corona viruses in bats. They share some of the same characteristics as the novel coronavirus. Can they also be transmitted to humans?
Bats are ideal hosts for viruses and even contribute Corona-like virus inside. This is what researchers found recently. Now, Chinese researchers have made another amazing discovery. During investigations, they found new corona viruses. These pathogens showed some characteristics of Sars-CoV-2.
CD35 and CD36: Researchers discover new corona viruses
The research team analyzed 112 bats native to China’s Hainan Province. They found three corona viruses Bat Betacoronavirus (Bat CoV) CD35, Bat CoV CD36 and Bat Alphacoronavirus CD30. The genomes of the CD35 and CD36 viruses are 99.5 percent similar. In addition, due to their nucleotides, they are 54 percent similar to the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus. Nucleotides are components in the DNA strand. In addition, the furin cleavage sites of CD35 and CD36 are identical. At the same time, the CD35 bat virus had a similar structure at the receptor interface as that of Sars-CoV-2.
Die Study but did not show whether the virus can also infect humans. There are no further studies on this so far. In return, it offers an important approach to another point. “In summary, this study deepens our understanding of the diversity of coronaviruses and provides clues to the natural origin of the furin cleavage site of SARS-CoV-2.”
WHO expects further virus outbreaks from zoonoses
The coronavirus has shown how quickly a virus can pose a global health threat. The WHO assumes further potential virus outbreaks in the future. Zoonoses in particular might increase in the coming years. The extent to which the newly discovered corona viruses pose a risk cannot yet be said on the basis of one study.
