For the 16th time, the federal traffic police and the local police are organizing a “weekend without alcohol and drugs while driving”. This control action will start tomorrow/Friday at 6:00 p.m. and will end on Monday at 6:00 a.m.

During the last edition, in January, 1.62% of the drivers checked were under the influence. The results were a little more encouraging than in June 2022, when 2.15% of those checked tested positive for a substance.

Police hope the downward trend will continue this weekend. “It’s never too late to appoint a Bob or to choose a safe alternative, such as public transport, a taxi or even spending the night where you are,” she recalls.

During this weekend, both the federal police on all the highways and the local police zones – 102 of them are taking part in the operation – are involved: 850 police officers have planned around 375 checkpoints, day and night. overnight until Monday morning.

“These checks are important: in Wallonia, it is estimated that one in four fatal accidents is due to alcohol. It is important to increase, for offenders, the risks of being checked. This system complements the campaigns and preventive actions carried out at regional level, with the Walloon Agency for Road Safety”, commented Minister Valérie De Bue on the spot on Friday.
